I started this sculpture in August, shortly after the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan again. By that time it wasn’t known whether Zarifa was still alive or killed by the Taliban for the crime of daring to think and talk while being a woman. Last I heard she is safe in Germany by now. Welcome Zafira.
As disgusting as the Taliban may be, please remember that they don’t hold a monopoly in misogyny. Think of Texas’ near total abortion law and the efforts to force that onto the rest of the US. Think of Poland where the government just updated their own disgusting anti abortion law by introducing a pregnancy register. Just to name a few.
